Le Mwana Pwo is an emblematic traditional mask of the Chokwe people. It is mainly found in Angola, but also in southern Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Zambia. Its name means “young woman” or “beautiful young woman,” referring to the feminine beauty ideal and to the representation of an ancestor honored by the community.

The Tchokwés are a Bantu-speaking population of Central and Southern Africa, mostly present in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola, and to a lesser extent in Zambia. Several thousand also live in Namibia.

This dance and initiation mask is in good condition (see photo). The materials used are wood, natural pigment and feathers.
