I present at auction a piece of exceptional cabinetmaking mastery: a classic and majestic Anglo-Indian console/side table, hand-carved entirely in the shape of a camel. Dating from around the late 19th to early 20th century, this masterpiece is the perfect example of colonial craft developed in northern and western India (likely in the Gujarat region or near Simla, the historic summer capital of British India).

Tables of this craftsmanship and stature were often imported to Europe to furnish the bourgeois parlors of the era, sometimes marketed by famous luxury emporia such as Liberty of London. The design depicts an armoured camel standing, carved in the round with impressive realism, proudly supporting the top surface on its back, enriched by drapes, cushions and floral saddles finely incised.

Technical Details, Rarity and Features: Origin and Style: Anglo-Indian Colonial Craft (Raj Britannico Era, 1858-1947). Material: Hard, noble solid wood (typically teak, rosewood or walnut), chosen for durability and to allow deep, detailed carvings. The Circular Top (Rarity): Unlike most similar models that feature an octagonal top, this specimen boasts a rare circular top (approximately Ø 38 cm), richly decorated with a central floral rosette and a refined sculpted relief perimeter band.

Unique Mechanism (Removable Neck): The true peculiarity of this lot is a brilliantly conceived structural solution: the camel’s neck and head are removable thanks to an ancient yet highly precise wooden guide (rail) system. A rare engineering detail that facilitated transport during long colonial journeys. Base: The piece rests on a solid decorative elliptical (or contoured) base, which gives the work great stability and a commanding visual presence.
