Sub-Saharan African art, with its richness of such original representations, is presented in this volume through a broad selection of artistic traditions spanning wide periods and territories, a great variety of tribes and ethnic groups. Despite considerable disparities between the different territories, some elements seem common to all African artistic traditions: statues of ancestors or gods, masks (whether liturgical, ceremonial, magical, intended for celebration or for daily use), weapons, fabrics and jewelry, all evoke an abundant universe of shapes, materials and colors.
