Boch Frères Keramis (BFK) – Monumental pair of five-light candelabras – hand-painted Delft faience & gilded bronze/brass – circa 1880
Description
Exceptional and imposing pair of 19th-century five-light candelabras from Boch Frères Keramis, La Louvière, Belgium, executed in hand-painted blue-and-white faience with richly decorated gilded metal mounts.
The ceramic pillars are in the characteristic Delft style of the famous “Chambre des peintres hollandais” of Boch Frères Keramis. From the 1870s, experienced tile painters from Delft and Maastricht were recruited for this work. They produced luxurious, fully hand-painted faience with Dutch and Chinese-inspired motifs.
Under the ceramic sections lies the characteristic hand-painted, interwoven BFK monogram – Boch Frères Keramis – together with additional atelier/production numbers.
The blue-and-white decoration consists of richly worked floral and stylized chinoiserie motifs in varying shades of cobalt blue. The painting forms a striking contrast with the extremely detailed gold-colored mounts.
Each candelabrum features five candle arms with elaborately cast rocaille and foliate ornamentation. Notably beautiful are the sculpted masks on either side of the ceramic columns, with movable ornamental rings, as well as the substantial shaped feet, acanthus decorations, scrolls and openwork crown.
Due to the combination of its large size, the precious hand-painted Boch ware and the exuberant 19th-century metal mounts, these candelabras have an exceptionally monumental presence.
