Icon - Nicholas the Wonderworker - Wood

Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, traditionally one of the most venerated saints in the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

The saint is represented half-length as a bishop, wearing richly decorated liturgical vestments and holding an open Gospel while blessing with his right hand. Christ and the Mother of God appear in the small medallions beside his head. The icon is executed in tempera on a wooden panel, with a gilded background and a characteristic red painted border.

The icon retains a strong and expressive traditional iconographic character, with finely rendered details visible in the face, vestments and ornamental decoration. The surface presents extensive signs of age, including craquelure, paint losses, abrasions and areas of wear, particularly to the gilded background and outer border. The wooden support also shows substantial age-related wear.
