Desk set - Candelabro - Bronze

It is a bronze desk set from the 19th century that preserves all the functional theatricality of antique writing desks: an object designed for work, but conceived with an ornamental sense that today makes it a collectible piece. The ensemble is organized on a wavy base, almost like a tray with softly cut edges, where each element occupies its place with a logic very characteristic of 19th-century writing: cylindrical inkwells, the container for dry sand, the supports for pens, and, crowning it all, a central handle that allowed moving the desk set from one table to another without dismantling it.

The bronze, with its warm patina darkened by time, conveys that sense of a lived object, touched, used during long days of correspondence. The bodies of the inkwells show perforations and well-worked caps, small geometries that not only ventilated the interior but added a touch of refinement. The central, elevated, and sturdy handle acts almost as an architectural axis that balances the composition.

At one end appears the candelabrum, a fundamental detail in 19th-century escribanías (desk sets): light should accompany writing, and this small candle-holder arm allowed direct illumination of the work area without the need for additional lamps. Its presence makes the piece a perfect testament to the transition between daytime writing and nocturnal writing, when the candle was still the writer’s indispensable ally.
