Vanitas in terracotta, early 20th century

Terracotta sculpture depicting an allegorical Vanitas composition, of Symbolist and decadent taste, datable to the early 20th century. At the center of the composition is a human skull, crafted with attention to anatomical detail and laid upon a volume or closed book.

At the base of the skull is clearly depicted a serpent, whose sinuous body winds along the base of the composition. The presence of the serpent reinforces the symbolic meaning of the work, recalling the themes of transience, death, temptation, and the continual cycle of life and dissolution.

The surface of the terracotta presents a dark brown patina, with several tonal variations and color irregularities that enhance its material quality and antique appearance. The whole, characterized by strong expressive intensity, fits within the tradition of Vanitas representations, conceived as a meditation on the fleetingness of existence and the inevitability of death.
