Statue - Mangbetu - DR Congo

Very beautiful Mangbetu ancestor statue (northern Congo) with a dark glossy patina. The motifs on the body correspond to tribal tattoos that were practiced among the Mangbetu, and the raised headpiece was fashionable within the ethnic group. The Mangbetu are also known for their practice of elongating the skull for aesthetic purposes from birth.
