Great Mask Kakuungu - Suku - DR Congo

The Kakuungu mask of the Suku, a people established in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the most striking expressions of Central African ritual sculpture.

Associated with initiation ceremonies, it is distinguished by a monumental construction where hypertrophied cheek volumes, the long triangular nose and half-closed eyelids compose a physiognomy of remarkable expressive intensity.

The use of light pigments, here enhanced with subtle blue accents around the eyes, heightens the contrast between apparent serenity and symbolic power. The perfectly balanced proportions, the quality of workmanship and the mastery of the surfaces give this work an exceptional sculptural presence.

The plastic force of the face, allied with a great formal sobriety, eloquently illustrates the aesthetics of Kakuungu masks, whose best examples are preserved in major museum collections and regularly highlighted by specialists in African art, notably at Christie’s.
