Description from the seller
Leaflet from the “Grand Coutumier” – illuminated liturgical manuscript on parchment – France, late Middle Ages – probably 16th century
Rare parchment leaf from a liturgical costume book, bearing at the top the old mention “Grand Coutumier.”
The document combines liturgical text and square musical notation on red staves. An instruction in Old French specifies: “After the repetition of that antiphon at Benedictus the singers say:”, indicating its use to precisely regulate the course of the chant during the office.
Remarkable large historiated initial illuminated, painted in red and blue-green, adorned with vegetal scrolls and enclosing a fantastical dragon-like animal.
The leaf presents several later annotations and alterations, notably the mention “This is added the second music,” testimony to a prolonged use and adaptation of the manuscript.
France, late Middle Ages, with later annotations and additions. The originating religious establishment could not be identified with certainty.
Old state: wear, stains, folds, tears and peripheral gaps visible. Fine preservation of the colors of the illuminations.
Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The object will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
