Biblia Sacra – Illustrated Bible – Venice, 1616
Important Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis, printed in Venice in 1616, under the pontificate of Sixtus V, as indicated on the title page: “Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis Sixti Quinti Pont. Max. iussu recognita atque edita – Venetiis, MDCXVI.”
Imposing volume (between 1100 and 1500 pages) preserved in an old full vellum binding, with title Biblia Sacra handwritten on the back.
The work is particularly interesting for its rich illustration: large biblical compositions integrated with the text, Renaissance frames adorned with figures, historiated initials and numerous vignettes.
The volume also contains the decree on canonical books issued by the Council of Trent, bearing witness to the Catholic Reformation context and the stabilization of the Vulgate text.
Printing on handmade paper, Latin text arranged mainly in two columns. Title page printed in red and black with a large typographic mark of the fleur-de-lis.
Condition: copy in its antique state, with wear, stains, and signs of time. Bindings showing damage and fragilities, especially at the corners and spines. Some ancient handwritten annotations. Paper overall well preserved given the age. See photographs for precise condition.
