A fine George V English silver-mounted dress cane by the renowned cane and stick manufacturer J. Howell & Co Ltd, fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1921.

The substantial silver pommel is particularly attractive, finely hand engraved throughout with dense scrolling acanthus foliage and terminating in a broad, gently domed top. The silver carries a clear set of British hallmarks comprising the maker’s mark J.H for J. Howell & Co Ltd, Birmingham anchor, lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter for 1921.

J. Howell & Co Ltd were specialist English manufacturers of walking sticks, canes, parasols and their fittings, and their silver-mounted pieces are characteristic of the high-quality accessories produced for the fashionable gentleman during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The richly engraved silver handle is mounted on an elegant black wooden shaft. Black shafts were particularly associated with formal dress and evening canes, intended to complement gentlemen’s evening attire, making this a particularly attractive example of an early 20th-century dress cane.
