KMD Daalderop Tiel – large copper vase – geometric relief – Dutch design

A particularly decorative copper vase from KMD Daalderop of Tiel, executed in a bold geometric form. The object at the bottom clearly bears the characteristic factory mark with “KMD – Tiel Holland – Made in Holland – Daalderop,” which convincingly records its origin.

The vase features a splendid monumental shape with a wide body, narrowing neck, and a firmly set base. All around the brass is adorned with a striking repeating geometric relief. The stylized motifs evoke trees, arrows, and diamond shapes, giving the piece a distinctly decorative character. The dark lines in the recessed areas create a beautiful contrast with the warm gold-colored brass.

KMD stands for Koninklijke Metaalwarenfabriek Daalderop. The history of the Tiel-based company goes back to 1880, when Johannes Nicolaas Daalderop laid the foundation for an enterprise that would grow into one of Tiel’s most important metalware factories. The company produced, among other things, lamps, household items, and numerous decorative metal articles.

Daalderop is of particular interest to collectors for its design development. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the company produced designs within Dutch Nieuwe Kunst and Art Nouveau, after which the stylistic language evolved toward Art Deco and geometric modernism.

Precisely that geometric influence is especially strong in this vase. The decoration is not simply applied to the surface, but forms an integral part of the design. The horizontal bands at the base and the small rectangular ornaments around the neck and foot contribute to a balanced composition.

The design and decoration fit well within the Art Deco / geometric modernist production of Daalderop from the interwar period. Without a factory catalog or model number I would deliberately refrain from stating an exact production year for Catawiki; dating circa 1920–1940 is most responsible for the advertisement.

Condition:
The vase is in a beautiful used vintage state. The copper/brass shows light wear and aging traces, small discolorations, and a natural patina. The decoration is well and sharply visible all around and the factory mark on the bottom is particularly clearly preserved. An attractive piece of Dutch metal design from Tiel, which works well both as an independent sculptural vase and within a collection of Daalderop, Art Deco, or Dutch applied art.
