Amsterdamse School / Art Deco square hall lamp in painted glass with four decorative panels, a dark patinated metal frame, and a metal chain and ceiling cap, dating to circa 1910–1920 and in working order.
Description from the seller
Amsterdam School / Art Deco hall lamp – painted glass – geometric decor – ca. 1920–1930
A particularly atmospheric Amsterdam School hall lamp from the interwar period, executed as a square lantern with four panels of decoratively painted glass. Especially when the lamp is lit, the design comes fully to life: the matte glass disperses a warm light, while the geometric fields in ochre yellow, orange, red and purple clearly light up.
The design closely aligns with Dutch Amsterdam School- and Art Deco lighting from the 1920s. Comparable Dutch hall lanterns from around 1920 are characterized by geometrically painted glass, dark metal frames, chain suspension, and an architectural structure. Documentation on Amsterdam School lighting also shows that stained and painted glass, in combination with copper or metal, was frequently used.
Particularly attractive are the four glass panels. The decoration is entirely geometrically composed of elongated vertical bands and smaller rectangular color fields. The warm ocher and orange tones are combined with red and a subtle purple accent. The lightly matte background ensures the light source is softened and gives the lamp a especially warm glow in the evenings.
The metal frame is sober yet gracefully designed. At each corner sits a bulbous ornament at the top. Above it lies a broad, slightly outward-sloping metal cap that gives the lamp its characteristic lantern shape.
The lamp hangs from a heavy metal chain and is supplied with the corresponding round ceiling cap. In the photos from the top, the older wiring, porcelain insulation parts and junction box are also visible. The lamp has been tested and photographed while working.
Historical Amsterdam School lamps were produced in the twenties by various Dutch ateliers. A well-known example is De Nieuwe Honsel, which produced high-quality stained-glass lighting between 1919 and 1929 and worked, among others, for De Bijenkorf and the Amsterdam Tuschinsky. This lamp, however, shows no maker’s mark, so I have deliberately not attributed it to De Nieuwe Honsel or another specific designer.
Characteristics:
* Amsterdam School / Art Deco
* Likely Netherlands
* Period: circa 1920–1930
* Square hall lantern / pendant lamp
* Four decoratively painted glass panels
* Geometric abstract pattern

Condition:
Beautiful authentic condition with clear signs of aging that perfectly suit the lamp’s character. The metal parts have patina, discoloration, scratches and local oxidation. The glass also shows aging and use marks. Please examine all detail photos carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Because of the age of the electrical components, we advise having the wiring and connection inspected by a professional before use.
A highly decorative Amsterdam School hall lamp that presents very strongly both when off and lit. Especially the combination of the minimalist lantern form and the warm geometric glass makes this a beautiful piece for a hall, foyer, staircase, or interiors with Art Deco and Amsterdam School elements.
