The Majiayao culture was a group of Neolithic communities that lived mainly in the Chinese region along the upper Yellow River, to the east of Gansu, Qinghai and northern Sichuan. The culture existed between 3300 and 2000 BC. The Majiayao culture marks the first extensive settlement of the upper Yellow River region by agricultural communities and is famous for its painted pottery, which is seen as the height of ceramic manufacture at that time.
