Louis XVI-style barometer-thermometer in carved and gilded wood

The dial features a wind rose painted in grisaille and the meteorological scale in French with the old spelling “TEMS”: Tempête / Grande pluie / Pluie ou vent / Variable / Beau temps / Beau fixe / Très sec, graduated from 27 to 29 inches. Mention “Selon Toricelli.”

Dateable from the late 18th century to the early 19th century.

Provenance / history: on the back, two labels from Versailles suppliers — J. Mallet, optician, 4 passage Saint-Pierre, Versailles and L. Couturier, rue de la Paroisse, adjudant of the Hôtel de Ville de Versailles — as well as a handwritten inscription “Mallet 19/1/22” corresponding to a January 1922 revision. An object that lived in the Versailles region and whose maintenance is documented.

Dimensions: height 87 cm × width 51 cm.

Condition: antique object in its original state, to restore. Wear and losses to the gilding. Old drill holes from woodworm on the pediment and the frame. Glass of the dial cracked.
