Roman Eastern Mediterranean red-slip pottery olpe / small jug, Hellenistic–Early Roman period, circa 1st century BC–1st century AD.
A finely proportioned small pottery vessel with a rounded piriform body resting on a low ring foot. The short, slightly concave neck terminates in a broad, strongly everted rim, while a small loop handle connects the upper body to the neck immediately below the rim.
The vessel was wheel-made from fine reddish clay and retains much of its original reddish-brown slipped surface. Darker areas around the rim and handle attachment are visible, probably resulting from variations during firing. Scattered mineral deposits and surface encrustations are preserved.
The compact proportions and red-slipped surface belong to the Hellenistic and Early Roman ceramic tradition of the Eastern Mediterranean. Related red-slip and Eastern Sigillata vessels are documented in Cyprus and the Levant, although a precise production centre cannot be established for this example.
