Born in the 18th century as the "work table," the "travailleuse" (work table) was the creation of mechanical cabinetmakers who competed in ingenuity to create furniture with secret compartments. Unlike a simple box, it is defined by its light legs and unfolding compartments designed to house threads and needles. Also called a "sewing box on legs," it is now wonderfully repurposed as a bedside table or a charming jewelry box.
