In 1978, the Skyline book by Franco Fontana, the culmination of a fully mature body of work, helped open the way for the new Italian photography with its radicalism and its typically photographic approach.

After starting as an amateur photographer in 1960 at the age of twenty-five, Franco Fontana would need more than fifteen years to reach such mastery of his art. He thus established his fame not as another colorist at a time when it was common to indulge in all sorts of technical tricks and the abusive use of colored filters, but as an observer who sought to reveal to the world the living tableaux that our eyes had not yet perceived. These lines of the sky, these horizons stretched between sky and earth, these subtle or sharp colors performed an unexpected visual synthesis between chromatic perception and the incredible ability of photography to disclose the hidden geometry of nature.

A few months before the famous Kodachrome book by Luigi Ghirri and six years before Viaggio in Italia, Franco Fontana was the first to question the linguistic possibilities of the color process and the aesthetic characteristics of photography by personally reinterpreting the world around him while beginning a rereading of the Italian landscape.

By publishing Skyline again, nearly thirty-five years after its first edition and placing it back in the author's personal journey and the evolution of photography, one realizes today its relevance, originality and modernity.
