Masque, an excellent Mali-origin piece by the Marka with a wooden body and brass plaques, measuring 48 cm high by 18 cm wide and sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
The Marka are an ethnic group very close to the Bambara, whose art is characterized in particular by their masks covered with brass plates, like this one. Decorative mask.
Among the Marka, Do is the spirit to whom the masks give form and which constitutes its expression.
Do comes from the bush via the leaf mask and, in mythical cases, through the masks of fiber and with heads carved in wood.
In the religious system of Marka society, Do is the most invoked and its cult the most elaborate.
The Marka are organized into structured and hierarchical mask societies.
There exists a medium-level initiatory language for communication in the hands of the initiates.
