• Short ntsoko sword "ntsoko" of the Saka/Ngandu
• Democratic Republic of the Congo
• Total length: 49.5 cm
• Period: early 20th century
• Materials: wrought iron, wood, iron plates and red copper, red copper wire
• Weight: 411 g
• Provenance: formerly in the Peter Westerdijk collection, Utrecht, Netherlands
— The short ntsoko sword comes from the northeast of the Mongo world: the Ngandu, the Saka, the Lalia and the Kuru. The blacksmiths of this Mongo complex produced a wide variety of leaf-shaped knives, and this specimen more closely resembles a spear point. They were mainly used as prestige weapons, but could also be used in combat. Peter Westerdijk states that these knives “were in the possession of every adult man among the Saka and their neighbors” (Jan Elsen, "De Fer et De fierté" - 2003; Peter Westerdijk, "African Metal Implements" - 1984).
