Shunsetsushō(春雪抄) is a major photographic work by renowned Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, published in 1999 by Photo Planet.

Described as a definitive example of Araki’s “photographic novel,” the book brings together a wide range of photographic subjects—including skies, flowers, trains and railway tracks, balconies, high-rise buildings, deserted streets, shoes, and nude figures. Through the juxtaposition of these diverse fragments, Araki creates a visual narrative that goes beyond conventional storytelling.

The title and concept pay homage to, while also challenging, Junichiro Tanizaki’s famous novel Shunkinshō (春琴抄). Araki’s ambition to create literature through photography is expressed through an extensive sequence of monochrome images, combining everyday observations with intimate and erotic imagery.

This first edition is accompanied by its original obi (belly band), an original postcard included at the time of purchase, and a three-panel folded leaflet featuring a critical text by Akihito Yasumi, “Notes for Shunsetsushō” .
