Description from the seller

• Axe "tshimbuya" Tshokwe

• Angola

• Total length: 48 cm

• Maximum width (blade and wood): 25 cm

• Period: end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th century

• Weight: 340 g

• Provenance: Leiloeira Côrte Real auction house - Porto - Portugal

— This axe is in reality much more of a scepter. Village chiefs, diviners and those close to the court possessed them, not worn on the shoulder as the Congo’s herminettes, but held in the hands, with the superb engravings on the wood and the blade clearly visible to all. It dates very likely from the very beginning of the 20th century. Perhaps even from the end of the 19th century. Its provenance is obviously excellent. The auction house is Portuguese, of which Angola was one of its colonies. It had probably never left Portugal before I acquired it.

— The Chokwe axe is sold with its invoice from Leiloeira Côrte Real.
