Coin of 1 Rin minted during the sixteenth year of the Meiji era. The obverse features the imperial chrysanthemum in the center, surrounded by the legend with the name of the country, the date in Japanese characters and the face value in the Latin alphabet. The reverse shows the large Chinese character 「厘」 under the numeral 「一」, corresponding to the value of one Rin, in a sober design with a clear calligraphic inspiration. The specimen preserves an attractive reddish-brown color with traces of original luster, well-defined reliefs and uniform fields with extremely slight marks from circulation or handling prior to encapsulation, in accordance with the MS63 grade. These small copper coins were part of the modernization of the Japanese monetary system during the reforms of Emperor Meiji, reflecting the transition of the country toward a Western-style economy and coinage.
