Ciborium in vermeil – Joseph-Philippe-Adolphe Dejean - Paris, 1846-1865
Ciborium in vermeil, Parisian work from the middle of the 19th century, made by the goldsmith Joseph-Philippe-Adolphe Dejean, active in Paris under the July Monarchy and the Second Empire.
The ensemble presents a rich repoussé, chiselled and engraved decoration with Eucharistic character.
The wide circular base is patterned with lanceolate leaves, scrolls and grape clusters, motifs directly associated with Eucharistic wine.
The pear-shaped knop repeats this vegetal vocabulary in a decoratively worked pattern.
The cup, sober and polished, contrasts elegantly with the decorative vermeil parts.
The domed lid is ornamented with sheaves of wheat and grape clusters, symbols of the bread and wine consecrated during the Eucharist. It is topped by an ornate cross with radiating decoration.
