Candleholder (2) - Silver - antique - 1564 gram solid

An exceptionally heavy and monumental pair of antique Dutch baluster candlesticks from the early 20th century. This high-quality set is in beautiful condition and constitutes an absolute top piece for the collector of historic sterling silver.

Silver content:
It concerns demonstrably silver; this is confirmed by testing. At the bottom are two identical hallmark stamps that appear to show the number ‘1’. Within the Dutch hallmarking system this figure indicates 1st-grade silver (.925). Although the full imperial mark is not visible, based on the testing and the double ‘1’ marking it is very likely to be 925 silver.

Craftsmanship & construction:
The candlesticks are hollow (unweighted) and feature authentic screw-thread construction with a central axis. The set consists of two candlesticks and the two original, loose bobeches. The classic baluster structure and engraved base demonstrate the high craftsmanship of Dutch silversmiths from this period.

Possible attribution (Gerritsen Zeist):
The design, construction, and the square master mark very likely point to the Royal Dutch Factory of J.A.A. Gerritsen in Zeist, or a comparable leading Dutch silver studio such as Van Kempen & Begeer. The master mark is clearly visible in the photos.

Impressive weight:
Unlike many later examples, these candlesticks are not weighted with plaster or lead. With an exceptional total weight of 1564 grams (768.9 g and 795.3 g), this set belongs to the absolute top tier within antique Dutch silver.
