Icon - Anastasis - Wood

Rare and splendid Russian icon, large in size, 89 x 69 cm, thus suitable for a church, dating to around the mid-1800s. The poplar boards, joined by two wooden rear battens set in a dovetail, are painted after an underlayer of glue and plaster, with egg tempera. Christ in a background of light in the shape of an almond rises (Anastasia) from the underworld and pulls Adam and Eve out. Around, King David, Solomon, John the Baptist, prophets. Gold leaf at the margins. Iconography typical of Russian/Greek style from the 18th-19th century. Icon arrived by inheritance in the 1970s.
