Vintage plant stand / side table – Atomic Mid-Century – graphic design – 1950s/60s

A deliciously distinctive vintage plant stand from the Mid‑Century period, with exactly that playful form and color combination so characteristic of the optimistic interior design of the fifties and early sixties.

The organically triangular top rests on three slender, diagonally positioned dark wood legs. The gold-colored metal rim forms a beautiful contrast with the graphic top in pink, turquoise/blue, black, white and gold accents.

Important: the top is NOT stone or tile mosaic. It is a decorative veneered/laminated top on which the mosaic-like pattern is applied. In the detail photo the fine press texture is clearly visible.

This type of low plant stand, in Germany often referred to as Blumenhocker or Blumentisch, became particularly popular during the 1950s. Similar pieces from that period were produced with colorful Formica/Resopal-like surfaces, brass-colored edges, and tapered wooden legs. Auction and design sources also typically date this type of furniture to around 1950–1960.

What makes this piece special is precisely the top. Instead of the common solid or wood-grain tops, this table features a fine lattice of hundreds of small colored fields. The combination of pink and bright blue with black, white and gold gives the whole a virtually Atomic Age / Rockabilly look.

Comparable three-legged tables with colorful tops and gold or brass-colored trim are collected internationally as Mid-Century plant stands. A similar three-legged piece is also dated to the 1950s, while other preserved examples are explicitly described as West German design from this period.

Condition

The table is in an authentic vintage condition with evident wear and aging signs. Especially along the outer edge there are signs of wear, discoloration, oxidation and local finish damage. The top also shows use marks and local wear. The wooden legs also show light signs of use.

These marks are intentionally not concealed and suit the age and original character of the piece. Please examine the detail photos carefully; they form an important part of the condition description.

A fantastic small piece for lovers of 1950s design, Atomic Age, Rockabilly and Mid-Century Modern. The striking pattern makes it a real eye-catcher even without a plant or decoration.
