The Vatican’s new series of euro coins, the first issued during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, takes direct inspiration from the pontiff’s coat of arms, reproduced on the cover with a chalk-effect finish and in relief on an ivory background. An intense blue tone highlights the inscriptions and the key graphical elements, evoking the colors of the two heraldic fields of the papal shield. This same color combination will become even more prominent in the new design of the case that will accompany future numismatic issues. This is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a true homage and a direct reference to the new papacy. The coins contained in the case feature an unprecedented alternation between the portrait of the Pope and the papal shield: the portrait appears on the higher-denomination coins, while the shield appears on the lower-denomination ones, creating a graphic concept never before seen in the history of Vatican coin series. The 2-euro coin also incorporates distinctive elements of Pope Leo XIV’s coat of arms: the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of purity and Marian devotion, and the heart aflame pierced by an arrow above an open book, which represent Augustinian spirituality and the power of God’s Word to transform the human heart.
