18e-19e eeu - Statue, Madonna met kind - 77 cm - Oak

The origin of this type of wooden Madonna statue lies in the Southern Netherlands (Flanders), Northern France or the German Rhineland, where the tradition of oak religious folk art flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Hand-carved wooden sculpture that strongly recalls a traditional devotional image of a conically shaped Madonna with the Child Jesus (in the style of a Black Madonna, comparable to depictions such as Notre-Dame de Vassivière).

The large hole and the rough finish on the back significantly alter the earlier assessment of the age: this statue is older than thought and probably dates from the 18th century - early 19th century

-Details: Mary wears a crown and holds the Child Jesus, who also wears a small crown. The base is formed as stylized clouds or a rocky foot.

This is a substantial size originally intended for a more prominent place, such as a regional chapel, a monastery, or a large niche in a townhouse.
