Portuguese walking cane in wood and silver 833/1000 - Javali II contrast, c. 1887–1937.

Antique Portuguese walking cane, made in reddish-brown hardwood, with a long slender shaft ending in a curved grip, of simple and elegant design. The end of the grip is enriched by a molded element in Portuguese silver 833/1000, of asymmetric and enveloping shape, following the curvature of the wood.

The silver piece bears Portuguese assay marks, including the Javali II, corresponding to the title of 833 thousandths, used in the period between 1887 and 1937, with the maker's mark also visible. The combination of the dark wood, with a smoothly polished surface and patina acquired through use, and the silver gives the cane a sober and distinctive appearance.

The wood preserves small marks, scratches, darkening, and irregularities typical of age and use. The silver likewise shows superficial scratches, small marks, and oxidation compatible with its age. The silver cap/applique is loose, with some play relative to the wood. There was no attempt to conceal or restore these signs of use.

Because of the presence of the Javali II contrast, this is an example produced in Portugal between the late 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, representative of the masculine personal accessories used in this period.
