Description from the seller
A charming and highly decorative pair of Cambodian solid silver elephant-form boxes, dating to early 20th century.
Each elephant is finely worked in traditional Khmer style, with raised trunk, large expressive ears and richly decorated ceremonial saddle cloths. The surfaces are embellished with detailed chased, repoussé and punched decoration, including geometric lattice patterns, floral motifs and ornamental borders. Both elephants open horizontally around the body, revealing a hollow interior suitable for use as small betel boxes, trinket boxes or decorative containers.
The two pieces form an attractive matching pair, with slight hand-crafted variations which add to their character. The raised trunks, elaborate saddle decoration and sculptural form give the pair a particularly striking appearance. They are good examples of traditional Cambodian silverwork inspired by ceremonial elephant imagery.
Condition:
In excellent condition for their age, with attractive natural patina and minor surface wear consistent with age and use. One elephant has a few tiny holes near the mouth area, likely dating from the original manufacturing process. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Size:
each Length 16cm x Height 12cm x Depth 6.2cm
Total weight: 492 gram
