Dag Alveng - 54 Mayo Road - 1977

"54 Mayo Road" is a rare, early photobook by renowned Norwegian photographer and conceptual artist Dag Alveng, created in collaboration with writer Erling Kittelsen.

The photobook is an intimate, localized study. Its subtitle ("bilder fra ett og samme hus, de fleste fra ett av rommene") translates to "pictures from one and the same house, most of them from one of the rooms." It features evocative black-and-white documentary-style photography by Alveng, paired with textual contributions or words (ord) by Erling Kittelsen.

The work dates back to a foundational period in Alveng's career, shortly after he studied photography under Paul Hill at Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham (1976–1977). It captures his evolving "straight photography" style—using a detailed eye to transform ordinary, overlooked everyday scenes into profound, quiet visual statements.

Because of its limited initial print run in the late 1970s, physical copies of the book have become highly sought-after collector's items in the antiquarian photo-book market.

Dag Alveng is considered one of the first photo conceptual artists in a Norwegian context.
