This double bed represents an authentic piece of Italian design signed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto. Born from the collaboration between two of the most important designers of the twentieth century and the prestigious B&B Italia division devoted to high-quality furniture, the object embodies the essence of rational, refined design that has characterized the Scarpa couple’s work since the seventies.
The frame is made of black metal with a squared section, solid and rigorous, defining the bed’s perimeter with clean, precise lines. Inside the frame lie the slats in light wood, arranged regularly and functionally, ideal for ensuring excellent mattress breathability and balanced support.
The contrast between the matte black of the metal structure and the warm tone of the wooden slats creates a visually elegant balance, typical of Scarpa’s formal research. The two upholstered headboards, separated and slightly rounded, are covered in black vertically ribbed fabric that adds depth and texture. This solution, not banal, gives the bed a sculptural yet welcoming character. The headboards do not form a single block but two distinct elements that converse with each other, conveying a slight architectural legibility.
The result is a bed frame that is not too bulky nor too minimalist, but perfectly calibrated. On the sides of the headboard are integrated two round nightstands with wooden tops and black supports. These circular, small-scale elements do not weigh down the composition but complete it in a harmonious way.
