Bob Mizer dedicated 48 years to photography and cinema for his association of athletic models, and 41 years to the publication of Physique Pictorial, the first gay bodybuilding magazine in the United States. His diaries, kept since the age of eight, reveal his openly acknowledged homosexuality from late adolescence. Yet, until he was 42, he lived and worked in his mother's boarding house in Los Angeles, where a strict ethic prevented him from fully expressing his fantasies. For 24 years, he worked in black and white and never photographed a man fully nude. But after his mother's death in 1964, Mizer created a universe devoted to the pleasures of masculine flesh, photographing men fully nude in explicit poses and saturated psychedelic colors.
