Description from the seller
Masque Hemba Soko Mutu
The Soko Mutu mask, attributed to the Hemba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, represents a highly stylized face with simian features, evoking the chimpanzee. The term Soko Mutu is generally interpreted as “frère de l’homme” (brother of man).
The mask is distinguished by a broad open mouth, a long nose, pronounced brow ridges, and an intentionally expressive, sometimes grimacing, look. Some examples feature a particularly marked dark patina.
The Soko Mutu were associated with ritual dances and ceremonies, notably in a funeral context. Smaller examples could be kept as protective objects.
It is also known under the name Mwisi Gwa So’o, an expression that can be translated as “spirit of the chimpanzee.”
