Inge Exner for Knabstrup – Terracotta wall relief with fish – Denmark – 1961/1962
Special Danish ceramic wall plaque in terracotta, designed by Inge Exner for Knabstrup Keramik.
The rectangular wall relief shows a strongly stylized composition of three fish, rendered in various bright blue tones. The fish and surrounding curved shapes lie in relief on the warm, earthy terracotta ground. The contrast between the unglazed terracotta and the intensely blue-glazed decoration gives the work a pronounced graphic and sculptural character.
The design dates from 1961–1962, the period when Inge Exner was associated with Knabstrup. The work is marked on the back and provided with a possibility to mount it directly on the wall.
A decorative example of Danish ceramics from the early 1960s, in which figurative motifs are combined with the simplified formal language that is so characteristic of Scandinavian design from this period.
