Design is van Arne Basse (attributed) – Danish Mid-Century teak shark/bottle opener – teak & brass – circa 1960
Special and highly decorative Danish Mid-Century Modern everyday object in the form of a stylized shark, made in beautifully warm-toned wood, most likely solid teak.
The elongated, strongly stylized body features the characteristic organic lines of Scandinavian design from the 1950s–1960s. The natural grain and figure of the wood are deliberately part of the design and run beautifully along the length of the shark.
Under the head lies the ingeniously integrated brass bottle opener. It essentially forms the shark’s mouth and is fixed to the wooden body with a brass slotted screw. The brass has a lovely natural patina that complements the warm teak very well.
Similar teak sharks/bottle openers are dated in Denmark, the 1960s. A related signed model is known with the brand “Arne Basse Denmark” and is attributed to the Danish designer Arne Basse.
