Jardinière - Cast iron

Antique French cast iron jardinière (planter or centerpiece) from the Art Nouveau period, late 19th century or early 1900s. The piece is characterized by its wavy rim, graceful, curved legs, and embossed bow and wreath motif on the side. The reddish-brown layer visible on its surface is a naturally aged, patinated layer of rust, making it highly sought after in the antique garden and indoor decorative market.
This antique cast iron jardinière is primarily associated with the Art Nouveau style, but it also shows signs of historicism (including neo-baroque). The object is defined by the following stylistic characteristics: Art Nouveau: This is indicated by the wavy, organic lines of the upper edge of the flowerpot, which imitate natural forms. The soft, asymmetrical curves are typical features of art nouveau metalwork. Historicism / Neo-baroque: The central wreath and bow (laurel wreath with ribbon) on the side of the flowerpot are a classic decorative element reminiscent of the French styles of the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras. At the end of the 19th century, French foundries preferred to combine elegant neo-baroque motifs reminiscent of the past with modern Art Nouveau forms.
