Description from the seller
Bengt Orup – rare 2-piece Strikt decoration set consists of painted linear decoration on clear glass - Johansfors Glasbruk – Sweden – 1950s
A beautiful and characteristic 2-piece set from the famous ‘Strikt’ series, designed by the influential Swedish artist and glass designer Bengt Orup (1916–1996) for Johansfors Glasbruk.
The set comprises a matching cream/coffee pot and sugar pot, executed in clear glass with the Strikt hallmark: very fine vertical white line decoration.
Groundbreaking Swedish design
Bengt Orup was appointed artistic director of Johansfors Glasbruk in 1952. In this early period Strikt was created, a series that together with Party is regarded as part of his groundbreaking designs for modern drinkware from the early 1950s.
The design was strikingly modern for its time. Orup combined simple, functional glass forms with a pronounced graphic decoration of fine vertical lines. This creates a beautiful rhythmic effect that changes depending on the viewing angle and light.
The combination of transparent glass, the white linear decoration, and the elegant, lightly flaring shapes is an excellent example of Scandinavian Modernism of the 1950s.
Bengt Orup (1916–1996)
Orup was not only a glass artist but also a painter and sculptor, and is regarded as one of the pioneers of postwar Swedish modernism.
He worked in two separate periods, totaling about 16 years, for Johansfors Glasbruk. His significance to the factory was substantial: it is estimated that around 100 different dinnerware sets and more than 1,000 models carry the designer’s signature, from functional utility glass to unique artistic glass sculptures.
Many of his designs have now become recognized Swedish design classics.
Strikt occupies a special place in his oeuvre. The colorful Strikt and Party series from the early 1950s were among his innovative designs for functional glassware and were produced in series at the time.
