Liquor set (6) - Manganese - AT’RT DÉCO

Refined, this cobalt blue glass Art Deco liquor set consists of a carafe with its stopper and four matching glasses, in an aesthetic characteristic of Central European productions of the interwar period. No marks allowing to identify with certainty a manufacturer or a specific reference, the set can be prudently attributed to a Bohemian production, probably in the former Czechoslovakia, around the 1920s-1930s. Its bold geometry and intense blue coloring place it squarely in the decorative vocabulary of that period.

The carafe features an architectural body with a polygonal plan, clearly faceted edges and strongly beveled shoulders. The blue glass, particularly thick on the peripheral parts and the base, creates subtle plays of depth between the cobalt-blue areas and the more translucent surfaces. The short neck, outlined by a geometric shoulder, receives a substantial stopper cut with slanted facets, whose silhouette evokes a stylized precious stone. The four glasses repeat this same geometric construction: their slightly flared walls are structured by faceted facets, while their thick bases enhance the depth and brightness of the blue. The set thus derives its decoration solely from the architecture of the glass, with no enamel or painted decoration.

The carafe and its stopper are in excellent condition. The four glasses are in generally good condition, though two small nicks are visible on the rims of two of them. A third glass also shows a few small stains. The fourth is in good overall condition. These marks should be noted in keeping with the current state of the pieces, without undermining the overall handsome presentation.

This aesthetic is part of the golden age of Czech and Czechoslovak Art Deco glass, when Bohemian manufactories deeply renewed traditional crystal forms with cubist volumes, bold facets and geometric compositions. Karl Palda, whose Haida manufacture was founded in 1888, notably developed in the 1920s-1930s a production of liquor sets and decorative objects based on these modern and angular shapes.
