Wine glass (7) - Manganese - Art Deco

Elegant set of seven high wine glasses in colored glass, featuring a slender, refined silhouette typical of European glassware from the 20th century. The ensemble stands out by the pairing of two delicate tones, a slightly amber-pink powder pink and a very pale yellow-green, as well as by a particularly seductive optical work. Their reaction to ultraviolet light at 365 nm reveals a characteristic fluorescence compatible with the presence of manganese in the glass composition; this phenomenon is well documented for manganese-decolored glasses, especially under UV-A at 365 nm.

Each glass has a generously rounded bowl, slightly tightened toward the lower part, extended by a long, perfectly transparent stem and a wide, flat circular foot. The bowls are animated by fine vertical moldings, called “Venetian moldings” or “optic ribs,” which discreetly structure the surface and produce, by refraction, a particularly elegant play of light. The lower part of the chalice also displays a subtle festooned effect created by the optical relief. The junctions between the bowl and the stem are underscored by several rings of transparent glass, providing a delicate transition and a beautiful precision to the set. The two colors harmonize while preserving their own identity.

The set is in excellent condition. The glasses show no chips or cracks and the feet as well as the rims remain intact. Very discreet irregularities inherent to glassmaking may be observed, with no impact on their presentation or use. The transparency of the colorless parts is particularly well preserved and the colored tones retain all their softness.

The presence of manganese is a particularly interesting feature here: historically used in glass compositions, notably as a decolorizing agent, it can produce under 365 nm UV-A light a yellow to yellow-green fluorescence characteristic. The “optic ribs” work, for its part, enjoyed wide diffusion in 20th-century decorative glass, especially in European and American productions of the Art Deco period and mid-century; glasses with similar optical-decorated foot are documented in productions from the 1930s to the 1960s. The absence of visible maker’s marks or labels does not allow us to attribute this set to a specific manufacturer with certainty.
