Fred Herzog - Black and White - 2022

The city documented by Fred Herzog over more than half a century has now disappeared: a kind of urban flâneur avant la lettre, Herzog wandered the streets of Vancouver, creating an archive that contains the essence of a bygone era. Today regarded as one of the most important street photographers of the twentieth century, he transformed the international debate on early color photography; however, it was only toward the end of the 1950s that he decided to devote himself predominantly to the use of Kodachrome color slides.

"Fred Herzog: Black and White" represents the first recognition of a lesser-known aspect of the photographer's oeuvre. Complementing the fundamental volume *Modern Color*, the book gathers urban scenes characterized by an almost graphic aesthetic, played with light and shadow, alongside travel photographs and images of rural life. Evoking melancholic atmospheres, the work reveals how Herzog's appeal lies in his ability to capture the synthesis of a psychological state.
