Thomas Ruff
*1958 Zell am Harmersbach
is a German photographer. The former student of the renowned Bernd and Hilla Becher class is today regarded as one of the world's most important contemporary photographic artists.
Thomas Ruff studied photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1977 to 1985 with Bernd and Hilla Becher. Ruff considers himself influenced by Walker Evans, Eugène Atget, Karl Blossfeldt, Stephen Shore, and William Eggleston. In 1999 he received the professorship for photography at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and there, from 2000 to 2006, led the photography department, the former “Becher-Klasse,” which under the label Düsseldorf School of Photography is regarded as a significant group of phot art.
