Antique wooden architect's model from Germany, dating to 1880–1910, in excellent condition and assembled, dimensions 38 cm depth × 37.5 cm height × 32 cm width, one piece, weight 5 g, wood likely fruitwood or beechwood.
Description from the seller
Probably from a 'Fassadenbaukasten' (literally 'facade construction box'), i.e. a wooden mass-timber architectural construction set designed to assemble façades in historicist style (columns, pediments, cornices, balusters, dormers, entry stairs, pinnacles/pinnacles on the roofs). This type of object belongs to the great German tradition of 'Baukästen' (construction boxes).
Being made of real wood, it corresponds to a more artisanal and higher-end manufacture than the standard boxes intended for children. The fact that the model is assembled and kept as a complete piece, with a high level of architectural detail (pediment with volutes, oculus, turned balustrade, stepped porch), suggests it could have been a commercial display model.
The style with a neo-Renaissance/historicist façade featuring a stepped gable, circular oculus, balustrade, pilasters, and round-arched openings typically matches the aesthetics of 1880–1910 (the so-called Gründerzeit / Wilhelminian era in Germany), a period when this type of architectural construction toy enjoyed its peak commercial popularity.
Without a brand or label or model number.
The item is located in Paris, and is available for pickup on site (but must be paid for by Catawiki).
