Description from the seller
Antique Double-Reservoir Writing Inkwell "Memory of Venice" with the Lion of Saint Mark and Mermaids - Bronze - Late 19th Century
Elegant and refined antique two-reservoir desk inkstand, dating from the late 19th century or early 20th century.
The piece is entirely formed in heavy metal casting (likely bronze or brass with a patina), featuring a splendid original dark patina of the era that enhances the three-dimensionality of its details. The structure presents rich figurative decoration in an eclectic taste, suspended between Neo-Baroque classicism and the sinuous lines of Art Nouveau:
Sides: Two splendid mermaid figures posed in opposition, finely modeled, whose tails wrap around the sides of the inkwell and also serve as elegant decorative handles.
Center (Iconography of Saint Mark): The shell-shaped pen tray hosts a magnificent relief depicting the Lion of Saint Mark, symbol of the city of Venice. The winged lion is shown with a halo and with its right front paw resting on the open Gospel book.
Relief inscriptions: At the bottom of the shell, just beneath the lion figure, there is a sinuous cartouche with the raised inscription "RICORDO" on the left side and, though more worn by time, the indication "DI VENEZIA" on the right. This detail identifies the object as a precious historic luxury souvenir from the Grand Tour of the late 19th century.
Reservoirs: Two removable octagonal inkwells with hinged lids, decorated with a lattice-like geometric pattern.
A collectible piece of great charm, perfect to enrich a presidential desk, a notary office/study, or as a refined period furnishing object.
