Despite the traditional title “Bijinga” (“pictures of beautiful women”), Ichiba completely subverts the classical Japanese genre. His women appear alongside grotesque creatures, fragmented bodies, strange flowers, newspaper clippings and surreal visual fragments, creating an obsessive and unsettling world.

The drawings combine beauty, eroticism, absurdity, violence and dark humor in a highly personal black-and-white style. The result is unmistakably connected to the lineage of Japanese underground illustration and alternative manga, while remaining entirely Ichiba’s own.

This volume is especially appealing to collectors of Japanese underground art, ero-guro, alternative manga, grotesque illustration and outsider-oriented contemporary Japanese art.
