Description from the seller

Chi-wara - Bambara - Wood - Mali - 67 cm.

Elegant and ancient Bambara chi-wara female from the Ségou region in Mali.
It stylizes a hippotragus antelope.
This type of crest was worn during rites related to Bambara agricultural festivals.
Here is a refined stylization with a long rounded neck, long horns curved slightly backward, elongated triangular faces. The nose is pierced. Metal rings arranged all along the neck.
Rectilinear, grid-like decorations on the heads and body; circular decorations on the neck.
Support with two holes worn by the attachments to the basket carried on the head.
The wood is hard, the patina is dark.
Good overall condition despite its age.
Personal collection.
