Candlestick - Patinated bronze - Bugia Nogotico

Fascinating patinated bronze bedside candle holder (Gothic Revival) with the iconic Chimera of Paris and mythological figures.
I am offering at auction an intriguing and unusual piece: a rare French-made bedside candlestick ("bugia" or bougeoir), dating to the second half of the 19th century (circa 1860–1890, Napoleone III period), in full bloom of Eclectic and Neo-Gothic (Gothic Revival) taste.

Artistic and iconographic details:
What makes this piece particularly sought after by Wunderkammer collectors is its rich and whimsical sculptural decoration. On the lobed base, inside elegant niches, lies the meticulous reproduction of the famous Chimera of Notre-Dame de Paris, known as "Le Stryge" (the strige, or the pensive demon), the iconic gargoyle added to the cathedral by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc during the great nineteenth-century restorations.

The eclectic whimsy continues on the volute handle, topped by a delicate winged mythological figure (a young satyr or the god Pan), captured while playing the syrinx (Pan’s flute). The candle stem is decorated with arched, pointed-arch niches housing reliefs of medieval-style figures.

Material and Technique:
The object is made of a solid metal alloy (heavy bronze/brass) using an excellent cast-molding technique. The assembly, clearly visible on the base, is secured by the typical central threaded pin locked by a slotted nut, characteristic of pre-industrial machining of the era.

Condition:
The piece presents in excellent original antique condition.
There are no losses, chips, breaks, or later soldering. The structure is perfectly solid.
The splendid dark patina of time has been deliberately and jealously preserved (the piece has not undergone invasive chemical polishing). The natural chiaroscuro enhances the sculpture’s three-dimensionality and guarantees its historical authenticity.
