For example, there was Auto Reverse, allowing you to play or record both sides of a cassette as one continuous tape. And the automatic level control prevented disruptive volume changes between recordings. In addition, B&O's famous HX-Pro recording system delivered considerably better sound quality in the higher frequencies, resulting in a richer and more detailed sound image.
The Beocord 5500 automatically adapts to standard, chrome, or metal tapes. There was also the option for Dolby B or C during recording. While playing, the recorder automatically switched to the desired noise-reduction system.
